Washington Musica Viva, Inc. (WMV) was incorporated in Montgomery County as a non-profit arts organization in July 1998. Its mission is to produce public performances of a broad range of classical, jazz-based, and contemporary chamber music. Washington Musica Viva has a special focus on local composers, women composers, African-American composers, composers suffering under political oppression, and unfamiliar masterpieces of all kinds.
Now in its 14th season, WMV has produced more than 180 programs, with recent performances at the Kennedy Center, the Embassy of the Czech Republic, the Czech Center of NY, the Embassy of Austria, Brooklyn Conservatory, and Busboys and Poets in Washington DC. Directed by pianist Carl Banner, the WMV ensemble is composed of professional musicians from the Washington-Baltimore area and New York.
Washington Musica Viva has received grants from the Morris & Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation, the Sprenger-Lang Foundation, the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County, the Maryland State Arts Council, the Viktor Kalabis and Zuzana Ruzickova Foundation, and The Randy Hostetler Living Room Fund to support its endeavors. Why does it need this support? Because it is not possible to cover the costs of producing small ensemble performances in intimate spaces through the price of admission alone.
